The park and the pristine blue water that encompasses its southern boundary will one day enjoy a virtually endless supply of clean, fresh water as a result of Everglades restoration.

There is a lot more to discover at Everglades National Park! Check out these interesting facts about this vast and unique national park: 1. Photo by Glenn Nagel www. An aerial view of the Everglades backcountry. Photo by National Park Service. One of the many animals that live in the Everglades, Alligators move three different ways on land.

They high walk, belly walk and belly run. Alligators, like this one in the Everglades, high walk when they aren't in a hurry. Other animal invaders that prey on, or compete with, native species include Cuban tree frogs, which eat smaller native frogs, and Nile monitors, which eat burrowing owls and crocodile eggs. Restoring the Everglades ecosystem will help to prevent new invasions and keep established invasive species in check.

The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan was approved in It is intended to restore, protect, and preserve the Everglades by capturing freshwater that now flows unused to the ocean and the gulf, and redirect it to areas that need it most for environmental restoration.

Restoring the Everglades will also have significant ecological benefits to places like Florida Bay and Charlotte Harbor, which depend upon freshwater from the Everglades to maintain the critical balance between fresh and saltwater necessary for healthy estuaries. The Everglades. People The Everglades is surrounded by human development, including the cities of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Naturally occurring bacteria in Everglades peat and muck assist with the process of decomposition under water, which is generally very slow, partially due to the low levels of dissolved oxygen. When water levels became so low that peat and muck were at the surface, the bacteria interacted with much higher levels of oxygen in the air, rapidly breaking down the soil.

In some places, homes had to be moved to stilts and 8 feet 2. The idea of a national park for the Everglades was pitched in , when a Miami land developer named Ernest F.

It had enough support to be declared a national park by Congress in It took another 13 years to be dedicated on December 6, One month before the dedication of the park, a former editor from The Miami Herald and freelance writer named Marjory Stoneman Douglas released her first book titled The Everglades: River of Grass.

After researching the region for five years, she described the history and ecology of the South Florida in great detail. She characterized the Everglades as a river instead of a stagnant swamp. At only 5, years of age, the Everglades is a young region in geological terms. Its ecosystems are in constant flux as a result of the interplay of three factors: the type and amount of water present, the geology of the region, and the frequency and severity of fires.

Water is the dominant element in the Everglades, and it shapes the land, vegetation, and animal life of South Florida. The South Florida climate was once arid and semi-arid, interspersed with wet periods.

Between 10, and 20, years ago, sea levels rose, submerging portions of the Florida peninsula and causing the water table to rise. Fresh water saturated the limestone, eroding some of it and creating springs and sinkholes. The abundance of fresh water allowed new vegetation to take root, and through evaporation formed thunderstorms.

Limestone was dissolved by the slightly acidic rainwater. The limestone wore away, and groundwater came into contact with the surface, creating a massive wetland ecosystem. Although the region appears flat, the wearing away of the limestone in some areas created slight valleys and plateaus—a difference of inches in elevation—that affected not only the flow of water, but also types of vegetation present.

The Everglades are unique; no other wetland system in the world is nourished primarily from the atmosphere. Before the first attempt at draining the Everglades in , the entire watershed extended from Orlando to Florida Bay. Average annual rainfall in the Everglades is approximately 62 inches cm , though fluctuations of precipitation are normal.

Droughts, floods, and tropical storms are normal occurrences in the area. When Lake Okeechobee exceeds its water storage capacity during the wet season, it pours slowly over the southern rim and flows for miles km to Florida Bay. The gradient change is so slight that the river moves only 2 feet 0. Sawgrass thrives in this river, dominates freshwater marshes and sloughs, and is the main characteristic of the region.

Severe weather, in the form of tropical storms and hurricanes, also affects the structure of the Everglades.

Between and , 40 tropical cyclones struck the Everglades, usually every one to three years. These storms alter the coastline, flush decaying vegetation from estuaries, strip weakened branches from trees, and disperse seeds, pollen, and plant material. Hurricane Donna in affected square miles km2 of mangrove forests by depositing marl over the roots and depriving the trees of oxygen. It also eradicated orchids, bromeliads, and other epiphytes that once flourished in the mangroves; their reappearance may take a century or more.

Donna also significantly spread buttonwood, saltwort, and glasswort, and epiphytes began to grow in new areas. Although the lasting effects remain to be seen, Hurricane Andrew in also destroyed mangrove forests and snapped slash pines in half. However, regrowth occurred quickly, and sand deposited by the storm surge improved nesting conditions for crocodiles and sea turtles. Ecosystems in the Everglades have been described as both fragile and resilient.

The health and productivity of any ecosystem relies on the number of species present: the loss of one species weakens the entire ecosystem. For example, Florida apple snails Pomacea paludosa are an amphibious freshwater mollusk. They have a single gill and lung, and live on stalks of sawgrass in water depths no more than 20 inches 51 cm. They are the primary food of the endangered Everglades snail kite Rostrhamus sociabilis and limpkin Aramus guarauna as well as the raccoon, otter, and young alligator.

Apple snails lay their eggs on sawgrass stalks about 6 inches 15 cm above the water line, and they are intolerant of being submerged for long periods of time. When the eggs hatch, young snails must enter the water quickly or face death. When water levels are too low or rise too quickly while snail eggs are developing, apple snails do not flourish, affecting the many reptiles, mammals, and birds that feed on them.

With regard to the ecology of trophic dynamics, or food chains, the species of invertebrates play a vital role in the Everglades. Crayfish, insects, scorpions, and other invertebrates also support a web of animals. The group of animals most integral to the overall success of Everglades wildlife is freshwater fish.

Few places in the Everglades stay submerged from one year to the next, so alligator holes and deep clefts in the limestone are vital to the survival of fish, and the animal community as a whole. Freshwater fish are the main diet of most wading birds, alligators, and otters, and require large areas of open water in order to repopulate. Young amphibians also play an important role in the food chain. Tadpoles spread quickly in isolated areas where fish do not have the time or access to reproduce in numbers necessary to support larger animals.

Hundreds of species of amphibians are found in the Everglades, and their availability helps support wildlife during short hydroperiods or in remote locations. These smaller animals support communities of larger animals, including 70 species of land birds that breed within the Everglades, and water birds, of which 43 breed in the area. Many of these birds go on to migrate through the West Indies and North America.

Several dozen species of mammals also thrive in the region, from tiny bats and shrews to midsize raccoons Procyon lotor , otters Lontra canadensis , opossums Didelphis virginiana , and foxes. The largest include white tailed deer Odocoileus virginianus , the Florida black bear, and the Florida panther.

Although slight changes in water level affect many species, the system as a whole also cycles and pulses with each change. Some transformations to the diversity of plant and animal life are natural, caused by fire or storms, and some are induced by humans, such as urban encroachment, the introduction of exotic species, and rapid global warming.

Environmental conditions in the Everglades favor no particular species. Some species, such as snail kites and apple snails, do well in wet conditions, but wood storks and Cape Sable seaside sparrows Ammodramus maritimus mirabilis do well in dryer circumstances. Several ecosystems are present in the Everglades, and boundaries between them are subtle or absent. The primary feature of the Everglades is the sawgrass marsh. Prior to the first drainage attempts in , the sheetflow occupied nearly a third of the lower Florida peninsula.

Sawgrass thrives in the slowly moving water, but may die in unusually deep floods if oxygen is unable to reach its roots. It is particularly vulnerable immediately after a fire. The hydroperiod for the marsh is at least nine months, and can last longer.

Where sawgrass grows densely, few animals or other plants live, although alligators choose these locations for nesting. Where there is more room, periphyton grows. Periphyton supports larval insects and amphibians, which in turn are consumed as food by birds, fish, and reptiles.

It also absorbs calcium from water, which adds to the calcitic composition of the marl. Sloughs, or free-flowing channels of water, develop in between sawgrass prairies. Sloughs are about 3 feet 0. Aquatic animals such as turtles, alligators, snakes, and fish thrive in sloughs; they usually feed on aquatic invertebrates.

Submerged and floating plants grow here, such as bladderwort Utricularia , water lily Nymphaeaceae , and spatterdock Nuphar lutea. Miami has an Amtrak station. The park may be explored by personal vehicle, commercial tour bus, bicycle, motor boat, or canoe.

There is NO public transportation in the park. On 30 May , an Act was passed authorizing a park to be acquired through public donations. Thirteen years later, through a combination of federal, state and private lands, a vast wetland teeming with life was dedicated as a national park. Everglades was the first national park preserved primarily for its abundance and variety of life, rather than for scenic or historic values. Boundary changes since have substantially increased the size of the park from the original , acres , hectares.

In , the Secretary of the Interior increased the size of the park to 1,, acres , hectares , including the former wildlife refuge. Two additional boundary changes increased the park to 1,, acres , hectares by In , Congress passed legislation that expanded the eastern boundary of the national park by , acres 44, hectares , primarily for the purposes of ecosystem restoration and protection. Highest visitation is from December through April, and the lowest visitation is May through November.

Walking and canoe trails, boat tours and tram tours are excellent for viewing wildlife, including alligators and a multitude of tropical and temperate birds. At the end of the nineteenth century the south Florida coast was still largely wilderness, one of the last coastal regions east of the Mississippi to be settled.

Early mariners knew about Cape Sable, located west of Flamingo as it appeared on their maps. It was here in that Dr. Henry Perrine was given a grant of land. Unfortunately his plans for a settlement did not materialize due to his untimely death at the hands of Indians.

He built Fort Poinsett on Cape Sable. The town of Flamingo was established in ; its citizens had to choose a name in order to obtain a post office. According to records from the National Archives, Howell C. Low was the first postmaster.

He was appointed on December 13, Cape Sable had its own post office and Jay L. Watrons was appointed postmaster on February 23,

What is Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding? Minus Related Pages. Vitamins are substances our bodies need, which we get from either the foods we eat or from a multivitamin.

Vitamins are normally stored in the body. Get Email Updates. To receive email updates about this topic, enter your email address: Email Address. What's this? Media Policy Makers. INR is based on a scale that compares results of different laboratories worldwide.

A normal INR is about 0. For someone taking a blood thinner, it might be about 2 to 3. Your doctor will be looking to see if the number is too high.

The treatment for vitamin K is the drug phytonadione, which is vitamin K1. Most of the time doctors prescribe it as an oral medication. A doctor or nurse might also inject it under the skin as opposed to into a vein or muscle. The dosage for adults ranges from 1 to 25 milligrams mg.

Doctors will prescribe a smaller phytonadione dose for someone who is taking an anticoagulant. Typically this dosage is about 1 to 10 mg. In infants, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that newborns get a single shot of 0. A higher dose may be necessary if the mother has been taking anticoagulants or anti-seizure drugs. If left untreated in adults, vitamin K deficiency can result in excessive bleeding and become dangerous.

But in almost all cases, vitamin K deficiency is treatable. In infants where VKDB is identified and treated quickly, the outlook is good. However, if the bleeding, known as an intracranial hemorrhage , lasts too long or goes untreated, brain damage or death can occur.

There is no set amount of vitamin K that you should consume each day. But on an average day, nutritionists consider mcg adequate for men and 90 mcg adequate for women.

Some foods, including leafy green vegetables, are extremely high in vitamin K and will give you all you need in one serving. People with conditions involving fat malabsorption should speak to their doctors about taking a vitamin K supplement and having their levels monitored. The same goes for people taking warfarin and similar anticoagulants.

Too little clotting can cause excessive bleeding from minor injury Too It is also needed for healthy bones and other tissues. Vitamin K, like vitamins A, D, and E, is a fat-soluble vitamin Fat-soluble vitamins Vitamins are a vital part of a healthy diet. Good sources of vitamin K include green leafy vegetables such as collards, spinach, and kale and soybean and canola oils.

Vitamin K deficiency can cause hemorrhagic disease of the newborn, characterized by a tendency to bleed. A vitamin K injection is usually given to newborns to protect them from this disease. Breastfed infants who have not received this injection at birth are especially susceptible to vitamin K deficiency, because breast milk contains only small amounts of vitamin K.

Hemorrhagic disease is more likely in infants who are breastfed or who have a disorder that impairs fat absorption or a liver disorder. Formulas for infants contain vitamin K. Risk is also increased if the mother has taken antiseizure drugs such as phenytoin , anticoagulants which make blood less likely to clot , or certain antibiotics. Newborns are at risk of vitamin K deficiency, because they do not get enough vitamin K before birth and because they cannot synthesize vitamin K on their own yet.

In healthy adults , vitamin K deficiency is uncommon because many green vegetables contain vitamin K and bacteria in the intestine produce vitamin K. If people have vitamin K deficiency, taking warfarin or related anticoagulants interfere with the synthesis of clotting factors which help blood clot and can make bleeding more likely or make it worse. Anticoagulants are given to people with conditions that increase the risk of blood clots. These conditions include having to stay in bed for example, because of an injury or illness , recovering from surgery, and having atrial fibrillation Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter Atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter are very fast electrical discharge patterns that make the atria upper chambers of the heart contract very rapidly, with some of the electrical impulses People who take warfarin need to have blood tests periodically to check how quickly their blood clots.

Disorders that impair fat absorption and that thus reduce the absorption of vitamin K such as blockage of the bile ducts Overview of Gallbladder and Bile Duct Disorders The liver produces bile, a greenish yellow, thick, sticky fluid. Bile aids digestion by making cholesterol, fats, and fat-soluble vitamins easier to absorb from the intestine. For more information, see the section on causes above.

Q: Why is vitamin K deficiency rare in adults? A: Low levels of vitamin K are rare in healthy adults because it is easy to obtain sufficient quantities of the vitamin by eating a balanced diet, and the body is able to produce some vitamin K on its own.

Q: What foods are high in vitamin K? A: Examples of good sources of vitamin K include: [18]. Q: Does vitamin K deficiency cause bruising? A: Vitamin K deficiency can cause a person to bruise easily. However, there may be other causes of bruising. Vitamin K deficiency can also cause heavy bleeding. Q: Can vitamin K deficiency cause anemia? A: Vitamin K deficiency in itself does not cause anemia. However, the heavy bleeding that can be a symptom of the deficiency, may sometimes be associated with anemia.

Read more about Vitamin D Deficiency ». Q: How is vitamin K deficiency treated? A: Low levels of vitamin K in adults can often be treated with dietary changes to include more leafy green and other vegetables.

Sometimes, a doctor may recommend vitamin K supplements, typically in the form of phytonadione tablets or injections. Newborn babies will usually receive a vitamin K shot to prevent deficiency. You might have already read our blog posts on what supplements you should use to boost your training and whether you should eat before a run , but mid-run eating is a little more complicated. They mainly consist of simple sugars, such as sucrose, fructose and glucose, and maltodextrin; which is a carbohydrate made from corn starch.

Although it varies from brand to brand, most gels provide between 20 and 30g of carbohydrate and often contain added electrolytes and caffeine. In this situation, glucose or fructose is exactly what you need.

If you do choose to top up the tank with a sports gel, Isotonic gels are usually the more convenient option as they can be taken without water. Mostly, this is a personal preference! Each runner absorbs and processes carbohydrates at a different rate. One person might feel the effect within three minutes, while others might take up to 15 minutes. Plan a fueling strategy and practice it during long training sessions to determine what works best for you. Good training, proper fueling and adequate hydration provides the foundation for achieving your personal best.

Energy gels offer benefits to endurance athletes, but what should you know before consuming them? Learn more about vaccine availability. Advertising Policy. You have successfully subscribed to our newsletter. Why do you even need gel, if you consume a drink that has say calories per bottle? I use Infinite Nutrition drink.. Calories from drinks and gels are the same. More than that and your body has a hard time absorbing it.

Do you really need energy gels during a half marathon? Just asking as I never felt the need, but will it facilitate a better finish? Depends how long it will take you. Under 90 minutes, likely not. Between and 2 hours is a personal choice. Past 2 hours I recommend one. Are energy gels needed even during a half marathon? I myself never needed them, but if I use them as prescribed will I be able to get a better finish? Will taking some kind of energy gel or drink or not taking it affect how sore you are after the race and over next few days?

Slightly, yes. The gel or drink could provide carbohydrates that help jump start the recovery process. However, I think a better solution would be to focus on stretching, foam rolling and massaging. Also, you should expect some soreness after a race as long as the half. I just ran my first marathon and did well until 20 miles when I had severe muscle cramps. When I paused and tried to stretch, this triggered a cascade of cramping, even in my hands and arms and abdomen.

My nutrition strategy was exactly the same as in training, low calorie Gatorade plus a gel every 50 minutes plus they handed out bananas in the final miles.

The weather was perfect in Chicago F, whereas my training was in hot and humid Charleston F. My running colleagues say I made a fatal error taking gels with Gatorade.

You seem to agree but your warning seems to be about too much sugar and stomach upset. I had no nausea or satiety, but severe muscle cramps that went on for more than an hour after the race. Any thoughts or advice for next time? As always, the article is full of interesting content. Just a bit confused. How would I confirm the reaction from nutrition like GU at race pace without actually running that pace on an extended run. If I have a tendency to bonk 18 miles with no nutrition then it stands to reason that I would have to test past that point to make sure that I can still injest nutrition well past that point.

I do not know if my stomach shuts down when I run or not. Or, am I making this more complicated than it is. Would it be better if I join or pay to ask questions? Along with perennial pudding favourites like cherry bakewell, apple crumble and lemon drizzle, there are caffeinated options such as caramel latte and banoffee. Most running gels are designed to provide fast-release carbohydrates in the simplest and cheapest manner possible, which tends to mean they use artificial ingredients.

Despite the dainty 33g serving, they still pack in 22g of carbs. The Tempo gel will suit those who prefer a sweet offering, with the dates in it offset by lemon and ginger, while the Doppio gel, which also contains 75mg of caffeine, is our pick of the bunch with its maple and coffee flavour.

These gels are a convenient way to carry a lot of carbs. Each of them contains 40g of carbs per 60ml serving — almost double the standard 22g you get from most brands. The carbs are provided in a Along with the standard Beta Fuel gel there is a nootropic version, which contains mg caffeine, plus other ingredients to help you stay mentally sharp during your endurance events. Taste test: The gel comes in two flavours: orange, and strawberry and lime, and the latter is surprisingly tasty.

However, they do have one unique feature, which is that they are the only gels handed out to runners on the London Marathon course. You can pick one or more up at miles 14 and 19, which will reduce the amount of gels you have to carry yourself. It hardly needs saying that running for a couple of hours or more requires a lot of energy, and the main source of muscle fuel over the course of a long event is carbohydrates, which your body stores as glycogen.

There are many ways to do this. Sports drinks , energy bars and dried fruit are all options, but many people find that the best method of refuelling is using energy gels. These generally contain mg of carbs, are easy to slip into a running belt and can be consumed quickly without breaking your stride.

All energy gels have the same purpose, to help fuel your run, and while they come in different shapes and sizes, there are two main types: isotonic gels and energy gels. Energy gels, on the other hand, just pack in a load of carbs. This type might be stickier — some of them are tough to get down without water — but you can pack more into a small race belt and reduce the weight of what you have to carry.

The trade-off is timing them around water stations in races, or having to carry water with you on long training runs. Both of these kinds of gels also have options that contain caffeine too, for a little extra mental boost, which can be very welcome in the latter stages of a marathon. You need to maintain a steady stream of energy, starting well before your reserves run dry.

Energy gels are a convenient option.

He averaged 2. And when they needed him most in the AFC playoffs, he was still in a fog and little help. He was no better the following season. The Colts released him after his second season with them. The joy is back: Richardson is The youngest of his three children, Trent Jr. It was a drought I went through. I was upset. I was hurt by the game, but you live and you learn. I learned the business part of it. What kept my pushing forward was my kids.

When I look up every morning and had a chance to be a house dad, take them to school, be able to go to plays and gymnastic meets and football, and see my kids playing sports, that too motivated me. They are and Richardson is a big reason why. He remains fond of Cleveland and has a positive outlook for the Browns. I want to be their star running back. Alright, I have to do this mentally, I got to physically get in shape, I got to do this and that. Bell made a noticeable commitment to training and conditioning last offseason and came back lighter and much leaner in The results were clear, as Bell showcased sweet footwork, quickness and an electric burst through the hole.

He was the best back I watched on tape this past year. That's just one example. I've seen it countless times. A player improves his conditioning, study habits and overall game and comes back stronger, faster and ready to compete for his job. The talent level is already there with Richardson. He's still the guy with the skill set that experienced scouts fell in love with when he came out of Alabama.

And even if he's not back with the Colts in , we can all agree he will get another opportunity somewhere. The tape is still the deciding factor in this game. That's how players are evaluated. That's the tool that leads to opportunities.

And every time a guy takes the field, he has to autograph his performance with that tape. Packers vs. Midseason awards: Who is MVP favorite? Cody Benjamin 1 min read. Derrick Henry ran for 2, yards at Alabama in , but has a total of 1, yards in two seasons with the Titans.

But thank you, for telling me how I should… and how you think Reznor should too, btw. Were you aware that calling a person a troll is highly subjective.

From my perspective, it appears that Reznor has called Andrea a troll as a smokescreen to draw away from the message. Have you taken the time to comprehend what the real issue is here? Your comment above is an ad hominem strategy — a ploy to divert away from the real issue; which is that fame and fortune does not exempt one from following the rules like the rest of us.

You do realise that Reznor calling Andrea a troll is exactly what you describe in the above quote, right? Are you sure you understand what unbiased means? Not that this really makes much of a difference, With Teeth blew as did his ambient-music-done-wrong album. Year Zero was just unlistenable. Still, I might have at least been mildly curious about his new offerings before he flipped his shit on Twitter.

Seeing this new side of Reznor is way more entertaining than the Year Zero ad campaign. If he reads it or has , OK fine. In my first letter to him, that was exactly how I started it.

I wont lie. I then re-wrote it minus that line. And then, the myspace comment he had left to Stenchie truly shocked me not sure why though. My reasons for writing this, yes are more personal than his actions lately, but they go hand in hand.

Your letter is awesome and has received s of hits. You rock girl! That really means a lot coming from you! It still feels like I left something out from it. I love your blogs, your opinions and the way you put it out there. And you most definitely rock as well!!

I hope the good response you got here wakes the writer inside you. Let it flow, you got it in you! In future, if you ever want me to post anything for you I will gladly. Thank you again for trust me enough to let me post this letter for you. Never discard anything you wrote! Save it. You dont have to publish everything. Write on sister!

Sarah Why would it make you disinclined to follow future musical work by Reznor? Imagine what the personalities of other musicians you listen to are like. Half of them are probably no better than his. He just chose to show everyone what he was really like. Does that make him any worse than a celebrity who chooses to hide the fact that they can be an absolute douche bag at times? The emotional impact I felt is gone, now that I know it was mostly a sham.

Many artists are much more upfront about their personalities and shortcomings. He carefully cultivated an image to match his lyrics. But for some reason, he threw that aside on Twitter and decided to let loose with every childish, petty, and tacky impulse he had. Though other artists might have as many faults, they at least are courteous enough to not take their insecurities out on the public. I do realize everything I said was of course my opinion and I would never state it as fact.

Now, lets move on. I would like to point out that I never said that this letter should not have been written, I said that in response to your free speech comment jokingly. Again not criticizing the author or the message just the route taken. Not at all, I would rather a more respectful tone when criticizing ANYONE and in agreeing with the message of the letter I obviously believe this should apply to Reznor addressing other people. Then the message would be more personal and perhaps more meaningful.

This is the premise of my argument. It was people bugging him that made him say all these ridiculous comments. Obviously the trolling and hateful twitter messages and emails pissed him off to the point where he said these things. Why not stop the original trolling assholes!?

Why not stop trolling yourselves!? Help me understand why! You get pissed about what he says but I see people write back things as bad if not worse! R u kidding me??? This is crazy…a fanous man in a band.. In internet terms it means its as old as dinosaurs. Nonetheless, thanks for taking the time to read it and comment.

However, some of the fans have it wrong. If you are pretending he has no right to privacy for being a rockstar, how would you like it if it were the other way around? He has the right to not feel stalked or harassed or you to be a douche over his wife. He makes more money that you. Reznor is underneath it all still a person.

A sensitive one at that. If anything, Trent was probably right about whoever wrote this piss poor excuse for a sulky letter. I am not Trent Reznor nor any of his friends nor any of his bandmates. As a matter of fact, I could care less about him or any musician or any superstars. They mean nothing to me. He seems to do best when inspired by other music.

I think he lost that when becoming too famous, dealing with fans and lost his own inner fan which is why he probably hates not only fandom but himself for losing his own spark for sounds.

Errr… yeah…. But many thanks for the assay. Many of his asshole fans may not believe you, but I most certainly do. You are commenting using your WordPress. Pretty Hate Machine was their first really big success, and with the band's second album, they wanted more of the same. Naturally, the EP's lyrics are basically a big middle finger to his old label. The band's relationship with Interscope actually lasted much longer, about 15 years, but after the release of 's Year Zero , Reznor grew angry about international pricing of his albums specifically in Australia and once again publicly trashed his label, according to Rolling Stone , which he left shortly after.

Hopefully, this won't happen a third time, because the band's record label since has been Reznor's self-owned label, The Null Corporation, and Reznor publicly calling himself out would be weird. When news that Nine Inch Nails was being inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was announced for , one big question hung over the celebration — who, out of the band's dozens of members, would actually be admitted?

While Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are the only permanent members, the band has included numerous touring and studio musicians. Part of the reason for this, at least according to one of the band's earliest touring members, Richard Patrick, is because, well, Reznor's kind of a jerk.

While it's been rumored for years that Reznor was hard to work with, Patrick, after being denied a spot in the band's roster for the Hall of Fame, said in an interview he ended up leaving Nine Inch Nails specifically because of the frontman, according to Consequence of Sound.

Between Reznor's attitude and his own musical ambitions, Patrick was already fed up. It came to a head when, on a recording break, Reznor advised Patrick to deliver pizzas for extra cash. Patrick quit the band shortly after in to form his own band, Filter, which became popular in its own right. Considering many other members of the band have only stuck around for a few years or so, it seems like that rumor might have some truth.

While recording for the Nine Inch Nails' Broken EP and the band's second album, The Downward Spiral, Trent Reznor had his eye on a very specific place where he wanted to record — Cielo Drive in Los Angeles, better known as the location of the Tate-LaBianca murders, where actress Sharon Tate and director Roman Polanski lived, and also where followers of cult leader Charles Manson murdered Tate and several guests who were at the house with her.

One of the more infamous scenes from these killings was the word "Pig" written in Tate's blood on the home's front door. Reznor found out the home was available for rent for cheap for obvious reasons and immediately signed the lease, according to Rolling Stone. He claimed not to know it was the Tate house before moving in, but once he did find out, he pretty tastelessly started calling his home studio "Le Pig. While he presumably did this to seem dark and edgy, it kind of backfired on him when, one day, he got a visit from Patti Tate, Sharon's sister.

She confronted him very plainly. He moved out of the house soon after. The home was demolished and a new one built on the same site a few months later. By far Nine Inch Nails' most popular album, The Downward Spiral spawned numerous singles including "Closer," which received significant radio and MTV play despite literally having the F-word repeated multiple times throughout its chorus.

The album is their highest-selling, at almost 4 million copies, per Spin , and brought them worldwide attention. Not only that, but it's one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 90s and of the band's whole career.

The concept behind this album is particularly disturbing, however. The songs and lyrics are all meant to tell the story of a man's slow descent into depression and self-destruction, i.

He grows angrier at himself, religion, and even his personal relationships as he falls deeper into self-loathing. There's no happy ending, either, as the final songs on the album, the title track, and "Hurt," strongly imply the main character finally succumbs to his depression and suicidal urges, ending his own life. Throughout Nine Inch Nails' success in the s, Trent Reznor maintained a heavy addiction to alcohol and drugs, namely cocaine.

This wasn't exactly secret, as a number of the band's songs imply or directly reference substance abuse. Reznor also, as previously mentioned, suffered from his own fight with depression.

This led to a lot of destructive behavior on his own part, such as frequently ending most of the band's live shows by destroying all of the equipment on stage.

Be wary of clinics offering treatments with stem cells originating from a part of your body unrelated to your disease or condition. Because stem cells that are specific to certain tissues cannot make cells found in other tissues without careful manipulation in the lab, it is very unlikely that the same stem cell treatment will work for diseases affecting different tissues and organs within the body.

Scientists have learned to make certain specialized cell types through a multi-step processes using pluripotent stem cells, that is embryonic stem cells or induced pluripotent stem iPS cells. These cells have the potential to form all the different cell types in the body and offer an exciting opportunity to develop new treatment strategies.

Embryonic stem cells and iPS cells, however, are not good candidates to be used directly as treatments, as they require careful instruction to become the specific cells needed to regenerate diseased or damaged tissue. If not properly directed, these stem cells may overgrow and cause tumors when injected into the patient.

View clinics that offer the same cell treatment for a wide variety of conditions or diseases with extreme caution. Be wary of claims that stem cells will somehow just know where to go and what to do to treat a specific condition. The more you know about the causes and effects of your disease, the better armed you are to identify your best treatment options. If you have a certain type of blood cancer, for example, transplantation with blood-forming stem cells makes sense, as the treatment requires those specific cells to do exactly what they are designed to do.

Without significant and careful manipulation in the lab, tissue-specific stem cells do not generate cell types found outside of their home tissues. Your best protection against clinics selling unproven stem cell treatments is an understanding of the science behind your disease, injury or condition. In theory, your immune system would not attack your own cells if they were used in a transplant. However, the processes by which the cells were acquired, grown and then reintroduced into the body would carry risks.

Here are just a few known risks of autologous stem cell treatments:. Every medical procedure carries risk; be wary of clinics that gloss over or minimize the risks associated with their treatments. But unproven stem cell therapies can be particularly unsafe. For instance, attendees at a FDA public workshop discussed several cases of severe adverse events. One patient became blind due to an injection of stem cells into the eye. Another patient received a spinal cord injection that caused the growth of a spinal tumor.

Note: Even if stem cells are your own cells, there are still safety risks such as those noted above. In addition, if cells are manipulated after removal, there is a risk of contamination of the cells. When stem cell products are used in unapproved ways—or when they are processed in ways that are more than minimally manipulated, which relates to the nature and degree of processing—the FDA may take and has already taken a variety of administrative and judicial actions, including criminal enforcement, depending on the violations involved.

In August , the FDA announced increased enforcement of regulations and oversight of stem cell clinics. And in March , to further clarify the benefits and risks of stem cell therapy, the FDA published a perspective article in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Know that the FDA plays a role in stem cell treatment oversight. You may be told that because these are your cells, the FDA does not need to review or approve the treatment.

These and other actions are needed to stem the tide of clinics offering unproved therapies and the people who manage and operate them. They list pay-to-participate clinical trials on the site, often without developing, registering or administering a real clinical trial. The site includes how and where to report adverse events and false marketing claims by stem cell clinics. I encourage you to visit and learn about what is known and unknown about stem cells and their potential for biomedicine.

Steering Problems One of the first signs people notice when their car needs new shocks or struts is poor steering response. Braking Issues When struts are worn or damaged, the vehicle will often compensate in other ways. Visually Damaged Struts While often strut damage is better felt than seen, you might notice visibly dented or damaged struts or shocks. Tires If your tires show unusual wear patterns it may be time to replace your shocks and struts.

Mileage Depending on vehicle and driving conditions, many cars require shock and strut replacements sometime after the fifty thousand mile marker.

Connect W. Recent Updates Oct Evidence of failures includes things like excessive bounce, units leaking to the point of fluid dripping, tires that are cupping and component damage that can be seen during inspection. Find one here …. To Restore.

This also negatively affects your ability to stay in control of your vehicle. Wear on other parts: Driving with bad struts accelerates the wear on tires, as well as other components of the suspension system, such as the springs.

Preventative Vehicle Maintenance. In addition to absorbing bumps and jolts, struts also provide structural support. They take the place of the upper control arm and upper ball joint that are required in conventional suspensions.

Each wheel will either have a strut or a shock. They come in pairs; if you have a shock on the rear left wheel, you will also have a shock on the rear right wheel. However, your vehicle may have shocks on one axle and struts on the other axle. In fact, most modern vehicles have struts on the front axle and shocks on the rear axle. You might have struts on both axles, but it is rare to have only shocks. Generally, shocks and struts wear out every 50,, miles.

Because of this, you may not notice that your suspension is going bad until things go from bad to worse! When you hit a bump in the road, do you feel like you could lose control of the vehicle?

Does your vehicle bounce more than once or twice?

Certainly, a key role of the U. Food and Drug Administration FDA is to review findings from clinical drug trials that pharmaceutical companies provide to them, and then decide if a drug can be approved for sale. The FDA publicly releases records from these reviews and, in , we mined them to help write Inner Compass Initiative's summaries about the safety and efficacy of psychiatric drugs. During this process, though, what kept striking me was how unsafe and outright dangerous many psychiatric medications are.

Benzodiazepines can cause intense physical dependence within weeks. Antipsychotics can cause diabetes, permanent motor dysfunction, catatonic states, and death. If blood levels are not maintained within a very narrow range, common doses of lithium can suddenly become lethal. Anticonvulsants can cause life-threatening rashes — and life-threatening seizures during withdrawal. And on and on the examples go. I started to wonder: How does the FDA actually decide if a psychiatric drug is "safe enough" or not for general use?

Under what conditions is a psychiatric drug considered too dangerous to approve? I was also struck by how short most of the clinical trials submitted to the FDA were — usually only a matter of weeks or a few months. Does that provide enough information about the safety of a drug, especially when many people take these drugs for years?

Some of Dr. Stone's own scientific papers can be found here. I submitted some of my questions in advance, and Dr. Stone began by addressing my over-arching question about how the safety of drugs is evaluated by the FDA.

He said the process is much less clear cut compared to how the effectiveness of a drug is measured. But safe is a relative concept. It has to do with risk and benefit. It's basically, 'We do think there are situations in which the benefits outweigh the risks. Of course, how "effective" a psychiatric drug is or is not, and in what ways, is worthy of its own discussion — but for this interview, I was most interested in how the safety of drugs is evaluated.

For information on effectiveness, see " How Outcomes are Measured in Psychiatric Research " or any of ICI's mini-booklets on the main classes of psychiatric drugs. Stone pointed out that many psychiatric diagnostic categories often encompass very different kinds of experiences and wide ranges of intensity. For example, some people who call themselves depressed may be experiencing a troubling reduction in enjoyment, and others may be experiencing frequent suicidal feelings. Consequently, the degrees of risk or harm from an antidepressant that might be considered reasonable by FDA evaluators or anyone else varies equally widely.

Because of these complexities, the FDA tends to leave key aspects of safety evaluating to physicians and patients to work out for themselves. A positive effect on some area of concern Those are clinical questions And it's often an individualized thing. In some ways, the FDA's position is understandable: A drug aimed at a terminal illness, after all, might come with high levels of risk — but some people would consider the mere possibility of temporarily delaying death worth virtually any trade-off.

On the other hand, though, when considering a psychiatric drug choice, many of us probably don't consider the fact that the FDA may have weighed the drug's risks against the premise that depression, anxiety, inattentiveness, vacillating moods, or inner voices might in extreme scenarios contribute towards some kind of fatal outcome.

I remarked to Stone on how often we hear that psychiatric drugs are " safe and effective ". The FDA regulates whether a drug company is allowed to say that a drug is an "effective" treatment for a particular condition — and the U. Department of Justice sometimes sues companies for using the term "effective" inappropriately. But what about use of the term "safe"? Whitaker: I know that many people find meditation helpful. I also know other people find it difficult—and even threatening—to sit with the silence of their minds.

We concluded that the research on this is not as robust as one would like. However, I think your question leads to this broader thought: People struggling with their minds and emotions may come up with many different approaches they find helpful. But the individual has to find his or her way to whatever environmental change that works best for them. Horgan: Do you see any progress toward understanding the causes of mental illness?

The Adverse Childhood Experiences study provides compelling evidence of how traumas in childhood—divorce, poverty, abuse, bullying and so forth—exact a long-term toll on physical and mental health.

Racism exacts a toll. So too poverty, oppressive working conditions, and so forth. You can go on and on, but all of this is a reminder that we humans are designed to respond to our environment, and it is quite clear that mental distress, in large part, arises from difficult environments and threatening experiences, past and present.

Shelter, good food, meaning in life, someone to love and so forth—if you look at it from this perspective, you can see why, when those supporting elements begin to disappear, psychiatric difficulties appear. Horgan: Do we still have anything to learn from Sigmund Freud?

Whitaker: I certainly think so. Freud is a reminder that so much of our mind is hidden from us and that what spills into our consciousness comes from a blend of the many parts of our mind, our emotional centers and our more primal instincts. I read Freud when I was in college, and it was a formative experience for me. What do you think? In other words, American-style capitalism, which works to create markets for products, provides an incentive to create mental patients, and it has done this to great success over the past 35 years.

Society gets a free pass. With our American-style capitalism, we now have a grossly unequal society, with more and more wealth going to the select few, and more and more people struggling to pay their bills. That is a prescription for psychiatric distress. Whitaker: That is something Mad in America has reported on. The pandemic, of course, can be particularly threatening to people in mental hospitals, or in group homes. The threat is more than just the exposure to the virus that may come in such settings.

People who are struggling in this way often feel terribly isolated, alone, and fearful of being with others. COVID measures, with calls for social distancing, can exacerbate that.

I think this puts hospital staff and those who run residential homes into an extraordinarily difficult position—how can they help ease the isolation of patients even as they are being expected to enforce a type of social distancing?

Horgan: If the next president named you mental health czar, what would be at the top of your To Do list? But from my perch at Mad in America, here is what I would like to see happen in our society. As you can see from my answers above, I think the fundamental problem is that our society has organized itself around a false narrative, which was sold to us as a narrative of science. In the early s, we began to hear that psychiatric disorders were discrete brain illnesses, which were caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, and that a new generation of psychiatric drugs fixed those imbalances, like insulin for diabetes.

That is a story of an amazing medical breakthrough: researchers had discovered the very chemicals in our brain that cause madness, depression, anxiety or ADHD, and they had developed drugs that could put brain chemistry back into a normal state. Given the complexity of the human brain, if this were true, it would arguably be the greatest achievement in medical history.

And we understood it to be true. But what can be seen clearly today is that this narrative was a marketing story, not a scientific one. It was a story that psychiatry, as an institution, promoted for guild purposes, and it was a story that pharmaceutical companies promoted for commercial reasons. Science actually tells a very different story: the biology of psychiatric disorders remains unknown; the disorders in the DSM have not been validated as discrete illnesses; the drugs do not fix chemical imbalances but rather perturb normal neurotransmitter functions; and even their short term efficacy is marginal at best.

As could be expected, organizing our thinking around a false narrative has been a societal disaster: a sharp rise in the burden of mental illness in our society; poor long-term functional outcomes for those who are continuously medicated; the pathologizing of childhood; and so on.

What we need now is a new narrative to organize ourselves around, one steeped in history, literature, philosophy, and good science. I think step one is ditching the DSM. We need a narrative that, if truth be told, can be found in literature. Novels, Shakespeare, the Bible—they all tell of how we humans struggle with our minds, our emotions and our behaviors.

That is the norm; it is the human condition. And yet the characters we see in literature, if they were viewed through the DSM lens, would regularly qualify for a diagnosis. At the same time, literature tells of how humans can be so resilient, and that we change as we age and move through different environments.

We need that to be part of a new narrative too; our current disease-model narrative tells of how people are likely going to be chronically ill.

How do we bring nature back into our lives? How do we create a society that helps provide people with meaning, a sense of community, and a sense of civic duty? How do we create a society that promotes good physical health, and provides access to shelter and medical care?

Furthermore, with this conception in mind, individual therapy would help people change their environments. You could encourage walks in nature; recommend volunteer work; provide settings where people could go and recuperate, and so forth.

This is an approach, by the way, that can be helpful to people who have suffered a psychotic episode. And that really is the mission of Mad in America. Can Psychiatry Heal Itself? Meta-Post: Posts on Mental Illness. What outreach are doing for these people? What is the Amen clinic doing to help people get off their benzodiazepines before having a spect? I agree with the above comments. It seems like treatment for the elite special ones who have the money and special situations only.

Please correct me if I am wrong. I have always been intrigued by brain scans. I wish I could afford it too. I kept thinking, eventually it would get cheaper. I agree that medications affect everyone differently and basic exercise, healthy diet and talking to a mental health professional has a proven record for success. I think everyone should have access to what is proven to work.

What is being done to offer scans at a price everyone can afford? They have an unsubscribe button and you just published you email on anopen forum for everyone to see. The cost of the Spect scan and interpretative visit along with not accepting any insurance plans is a huge barrier for someone who desperately needs your help.

Please investigate targeted Individuals. Many continue to suffer from this horrific crime. Make it affordable Amen clinics. I agree with all of these comments. To hold out hope when the cost is hopeless is contradictory at best and cruel at worst. My son would have been much better off to pitch his in the trash. My own GP told me that these patients do this because the side effects really can be that bad. My son was in the neurology section of a big university and nothing helped, so he ended in the psychiatry section.

That group changed his meds on the spot, no tapering! He went into fugue states and all, with police involved. It was awful. So he swore off everything and at least knows where he is!

We have a visit scheduled for my 16 year old daughter coming up next week. When I looked at the price breakdown of the services, I truly feel the cost of the scans, treatment and follow up is almost exactly what we are paying out of pocket already for MEDIOCRE psychiatric care with little to no results after 3 YEARS……So, my husband who is an emergency room physician and I decided to give it a shot.

Nothing has really worked. So, we are borrowing money to get some help from Amen clinics. And, as I said, we have spent tens of thousands trying desperately to find a solution…. They have been unsuccessful and at times made him very sick. RSS feed for comments on this post. Name required. Mail will not be published required. November 12, Share:. Allowing to get deeper into the squat. Also to mention the enhanced dorsiflexion caused by the heel really helpful when it comes to get your trunk stable. The only cons it is the price, really overpriced shoes in my opinion. I love my new red adidas oly shoes for all lifting movements. I have the Adidas shown above. Ive had them for about 8 mnths now and they were my first pair of weight lifting shoes.

I love them. They also feel extremely stable while lifting. Much more than the Reeboks but i will say the Nike feel much more stable but are much heavier. I think we should try to match the show to the person! Invictus Blog. Connect with. Create a Comment Account.

Ever see someone on their toes during an overhead squat no matter how hard they try to put their weight in their heels? This is probably someone with poor ankle mobility. Oly lifting shoes can help this. The raised heel platform of an olympic lifting shoe means squatting requires less range of motion in the ankle.

In theory this is awesome. It allows someone who previously struggled to have good squat form to get in a much more optimal position. Probably not. Most likely, they will forget the whole ankle thing was ever an issue, and always use their Oly shoes when squats show up in a workout. But guess what? It was a personal experiment. The result? However these doubles at lb kg felt really good!

I felt stronger and more stable than ever. Related is the argument that if a lifter is already mobile enough to sit into a good squat position, lifting shoes are unnecessary.

In my experience, these athletes are typically far overestimating the quality of their positions, but more importantly, this argument fails to take into account the force transfer and stability qualities. These have nothing to do with mobility, and offer a significant advantage in performance and safety over other shoes, which are like lifting while standing on a pile of marshmallows in an inflatable raft.

Following the invasion and subsequent occupation of France, the Nazis turned their attention towards Britain. The Nazis assumed that, due to the defeat of almost all of their allies, Britain would be willing to agree to a negotiated peace deal. In the face of this opposition, the Nazis began to step up planning for Operation Sealion — the code name for the invasion of Britain. The Luftwaffe initiated the first attack as part of the Battle of Britain on 10 July For the first six weeks the Luftwaffe concentrated on bombing strategic targets, such as air strips, on the south coast.

After a series of battles, it became clear that the Nazis were not going to enjoy a swift and easy victory. This decision marked an active switch to bombing civilian targets. Whilst devastating for London, the bombing raids on the East End allowed the RAF crucial time to recover from the raids on their own runways and airports. On 14 September , Hitler recognised that invading Britain was, at that moment, impossible.

Operation Sealion was postponed indefinitely. The bombing of London, which became known as the Blitz, continued until 11 May The British, who had troops stationed in Egypt which was a colony at the time , responded four days later by capturing the Italian Fort Capuzzo in Egypt. A series of counter offensives followed. The situation reached a head in the Second Battle of El Alamein in October , which became a key turning point in the war.

The German and Italian troops were expecting an attack, and sheltered behind a minefield. The Allied invasion took place in two parts: an intense bombing campaign followed by infantry attack which then cleared the way for armoured divisions to break through the German defences. The German and Italian troops were in a weak position, with their leader, Erwin Rommel, in hospital from 23 September onwards.

They also had little fuel or transport. Rommel returned from hospital to retake command on the 25 October By 2 November , the defences were near breaking point. Rommel withdrew his troops on 4 November By 11 November, the battle was over, leaving the Allied troops victorious. The battle marked a turning point in the North Africa campaign, reviving the morale of the Allied troops following the failure of the Battle of France.

After a winter stalemate in , with both sides building up reinforcements, the Allied troops advanced and surrounded the Axis troops. On 13 May , the Axis forces in North Africa surrendered. All Axis territory was captured along with , experienced troops. It represented a significant reduction of Axis power. By , the German Army had annexed or occupied large parts of Europe. This map shows these territories as well as the German advance into the Soviet Union.

This certificate was issued to thank German citizens for their donations of fur and winter clothes in response to a Christmas appeal for the troops on the Eastern Front. Following the failure of the Battle of Britain, the Nazis turned their focus towards their ideological enemy, the Soviet Union. Hitler had always envisioned that a successful war against the Soviet Union would be necessary to achieve two of the Nazis ideological aims: Lebensraum and the destruction of communism. Hitler had anticipated the attack being similar, if not easier, than that of France, lasting four or five months at most.

The Nazis viewed the Russian people as racially and ideologically inferior: no match for the German army. Hitler authorised preparations for the attack, known as Operation Barbarossa , on the 18 December The Nazis invaded the Soviet Union on 22 June This broke the Nazi-Soviet aggression pact which had been signed just two years prior.

The Nazis aimed their attacks at three key targets, the Ukraine in the south, Moscow in the middle, and Leningrad in the north. The invasion took the Soviets by surprise. Initially, the Nazis managed to cover large territories and encircle masses of troops, who duly surrendered. By late September, the Nazis were on the edge of Leningrad, having covered hundreds of miles of Soviet territory.

Despite these tactical achievements, Soviet resistance hardened and the country did not surrender. Although less well trained than their German counterparts, the Soviet Army was extremely large and they were more used to the difficult terrain than German troops.

Having expected a quick victory, the German troops became more and more exhausted and they were unprepared for a Russian winter after months of warfare. Supply chains were slow, leaving troops short of key materials. In late , the Soviets launched a counterattack on the German troops outside Moscow, pushing the Germans back into a defensive battle. The mass murder of Soviet Jews by the Einsatzgruppen was an essential part of the planning that took place in the six months prior to the invasion of the Soviet Union.

Their victims included, but were not limited to, Slavs, Jews, Roma and their political opponents. The Einsatzgruppen were made up approximately men. They were assisted by the Germany Army and local collaborators. In contrast to the extermination camp system which was used widely for Jews in Germany, Austria and occupied Poland, the Einsatzgruppen murdered their victims where they lived or nearby to where they lived.

Typically, the Einsatzgruppen murdered their victims in mass shootings, however there were also cases of the Einsatzgruppen using mobile gas vans. Einsatzgruppe A covered Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Einsatzgruppe B covered eastern Poland from Warsaw east and Belorussia. Einsatzgruppe C covered southeastern Poland from Krakow east and western Ukraine.

Einsatzgruppe D covered Romania, southern Ukraine and the Crimea. The following day, the United States declared war on Japan. Until the end of , the United States of America had remained a neutral country, not involved in the War. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, the most important naval base in America, on 7 December changed this.

The USA were caught by surprise by the attack. Over people were killed, and more than people were injured. A large majority of the military vehicles present were destroyed or broken.

The reaction to the sheer devastation caused was immediate. Hitler supported the Japanese attack, and shortly after, on 11 December , declared war on the USA. The USA immediately retaliated, and returned the declaration. The bombing of Pearl Harbour, which brought the United States into the war on the side of the Allies, had a huge impact on the final outcome of the war.

Stalingrad was one of the largest and most brutal battles of the Second World War. Here, German troops run through a trench in the north of Stalingrad during battle. This pamphlet was published in July It circulated the details of a meeting of German resistance in , shortly after the end of the Battle of Stalingrad.

The pamphlet helps to evidence the small but growing discontent from some groups against the Nazis in Germany by this stage in the war. The battle of the Atlantic was over. The most dramatic and most significant reversal of German fortunes came, however, on the eastern front. The sheer scale of the conflict between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army dwarfed anything seen anywhere else during the second world war.

From 22 June , the day of the German invasion, there was never a point at which less than two-thirds of the German armed forces were engaged on the eastern front. Deaths on the eastern front numbered more than in all the other theatres of war put together, including the Pacific. Hitler had expected the Soviet Union, which he regarded as an unstable state, ruled by a clique of "Jewish Bolsheviks" a bizarre idea, given the fact that Stalin himself was an antisemite , exploiting a vast mass of racially inferior and disorganised peasants, to crumble as soon as it was attacked.

But it did not. On the contrary, Stalin's patriotic appeals to his people helped rally them to fight in the "great patriotic war", spurred on by horror at the murderous brutality of the German occupation. More than three million Soviet prisoners of war were deliberately left to die of starvation and disease in makeshift camps. Civilians were drafted into forced labour, villages were burned to the ground, towns reduced to rubble. More than one million people died in the siege of Leningrad; but it did not fall.

Soviet reserves of manpower and resources were seemingly inexhaustible. In a vast effort, major arms and munitions factories had been dismantled and transported to safety east of the Urals. Here they began to pour out increasing quantities of military hardware, including the terrifying "Stalin organ", the Katyusha rocket-launcher. In the longer run, the Germans were unable to match any of this; even if some of their hardware, notably the Tiger and Panther tanks, was better than anything the Russians could produce, they simply could not get them off the production lines in sufficient quantities to make a decisive difference.

Already in December , Japan's entry into the war, and its consequent preoccupation with campaigns in the Pacific, allowed Stalin to move large quantities of men and equipment to the west, where they brought the German advance to a halt before Moscow. Unprepared for a winter war, poorly clad, and exhausted from months of rapid advance and bitter fighting, the German forces had to abandon the idea of taking the Russian capital.

A whole string of generals succumbed to heart attacks or nervous exhaustion, and were replaced; Hitler himself took over as commander-in-chief of the army. Hitler had already weakened the thrust towards Moscow by diverting forces to take the grainfields of the Ukraine and push on to the Crimea.

For much of , this tactic seemed to be succeeding. German forces took the Crimea and advanced towards the oilfields of the Caucasus. Here again, acquiring new supplies of fuel to replenish Germany's dwindling stocks was the imperative.

But Soviet generals had begun to learn how to co-ordinate tanks, infantry and air power and to avoid encirclement by tactical withdrawals. German losses mounted. The German forces were already dangerously short of reserves and supplies when they reached the city of Stalingrad on the river Volga, in August Three months later, they had still not taken the city.

Stalingrad became the object of a titanic struggle between the Germans and the Soviets, less because of its strategic importance than because of its name.

When the Germans moved their best troops into the city, leaving the rear to be guarded by weaker Romanian and Italian forces, the Soviet generals saw their chance, broke through the rearguard and surrounded the besieging forces.

Short of fuel and ammunition, the Germans under General Paulus were unable to break out. As one airfield after another was captured by the Red Army, supplies ran out and the German troops began to starve to death. On 31 January , refusing the invitation to commit suicide that came with Hitler's gift of a field marshal's baton, Paulus surrendered. So the high command was far from inactive before the war. Both in France and internationally, the French army of is seen as lacking courage. Do you think this image is accurate? But for the most part French soldiers fought with courage and tenacity. Statistics show just how brutal the fighting was. Around 60, French soldiers were killed between May and June.

The German military lost 30 percent of its tanks and planes during the Battle of France. Its death toll is estimated at 27, killed and missing in June and 21, in May.

Well, as always, it was a multifaceted military campaign, and their degree of success was dependent on the terrain, the quality of leadership, the quality of the weaponry they had etc.
